We’ve put together answers to some of the most common questions we get from couples, from what your elopement could look like and what happens on the day, to choosing your season, locations, vendors and everything in between.
Our goal is to make the whole experience feel easy and stress-free, and that starts with knowing exactly what to expect. Is a Queenstown Elopement right for us?
-
Queenstown is one of the most spectacular places in New Zealand to elope, with incredible mountains, lakes and landscapes providing a beautiful backdrop for an intimate wedding. From dramatic alpine views and peaceful lakesides to beautiful forests and hidden locations, there are so many options to create an elopement that feels completely personal to you.
An elopement in Queenstown also means you can combine your wedding with an unforgettable holiday. Spend a few days exploring, eating and drinking your way around the region, getting out into the mountains or simply relaxing and enjoying being here together.
Whether it’s just the two of you or you’re bringing along your favourite people, a Queenstown elopement is about making the day feel like you - relaxed, fun and a little bit different from a traditional wedding.
-
An elopement doesn’t have to mean just the two of you! Depending on your chosen package, location and what you have in mind for the day, you can bring along some of your favourite people too.
Our locations can accommodate anywhere from 2 to around 20 guests, although this varies between locations. If you already have a guest list in mind, let us know when you’re choosing your package and location and we can help find the best option for your group.
-
Yes! You don’t need to be a New Zealand citizen or resident to get married here.
Your New Zealand marriage is legally recognised, although depending on your home country there may be additional paperwork required once you return home.
We recommend checking the requirements for your country before travelling.
You can also read more of our FAQs below or check out our blog on everything you need to know about getting legally married in New Zealand as an overseas couple.
-
One of the great things about eloping is that you can focus your budget on the parts of your wedding that matter most to you, without having to organise and pay for all the extras that come with a traditional wedding.
Our Queenstown Elopement packages range from $7,700 NZD to $15,500 NZD, depending on the experience and inclusions you choose.
You’ll just need to budget separately for things like flights, accommodation, your dinner or reception, marriage licence and any extras you’d like to add to your day.
Check out our blog for a full breakdown of elopement costs.
-
We offer a range of packages, from ground elopements and helicopter elopements to packages that combine both.
Our packages can include things like photography, videography, celebrant services, flowers, hair and makeup, your ceremony location and other wedding-day essentials.
Have a look through our elopement packages to see what’s included in each and find the one that feels right for you.
Planning Your Elopement
-
As soon as you know you want to do it!
Some dates and seasons are more popular than others, so booking early gives you the best choice.
That said, elopements are wonderfully flexible and we can sometimes pull things together surprisingly quickly. Get in touch and we’ll see what we can make happen.
-
There really isn’t a bad one.
Summer gives you long, warmer days. Autumn is ridiculously beautiful with all the changing colours, and those big golden evenings. Winter brings snow-covered mountains, and spring gives you a bit of everything.
The best season really comes down to the look and feel you want for your day.
-
We recommend at least four days. Ideally arrive a day or two before your elopement and stay for a couple of days afterwards.
Not only does this give you time to actually enjoy Queenstown, it also gives us a little wiggle room if Mother Nature decides not to cooperate on your original wedding day.
-
We sure do. Queenstown has everything from beautiful hotels right in town to private villas with ridiculous mountain views.
Have a look through our accommodation recommendations, or ask us if you need some ideas based on where you’d like to get ready and what kind of stay you’re after.
-
This is Queenstown. Eating and drinking well is something we take very seriously.
There are plenty of incredible restaurants for everything from dinner for two to a private celebration with your favourite people.
Check out our dining recommendations for some of our favourites.
-
Not necessarily.
If you’re staying centrally, you can walk to loads of restaurants and bars and taxis and Uber are available.
Hiring a car does give you more freedom to explore though, especially if you’re planning to make a little holiday out of your elopement.

Getting ready for your Elopement
-
Most couples get ready at their accommodation, so choose somewhere with enough space to comfortably get yourselves sorted.
Good natural light and a little bit of room are always a bonus, especially if hair, makeup, photography and video are joining you there.
-
Totally up to you.
Some couples love getting ready together and making the whole day feel relaxed from the beginning. Others want that first-look moment and choose to get ready separately.
There are no rules here. Do whatever feels most like you.
-
If you want to!
First looks can be a really beautiful part of an elopement, especially if you’re getting ready separately. It gives you a private moment together before everything kicks off and makes for some pretty special photos too.
If you’d rather save that moment for the ceremony, we can absolutely do that instead.
-
Keep it simple.
Your phone, lipstick, sunglasses, a warm layer and a change of shoes if you’re heading into the mountains are generally plenty.
For heli elopements, a small bag or backpack can come with you, so you don’t need to stuff everything into your pockets.
-
Item descriptionYou can absolutely wear your dream wedding shoes, but we highly recommend bringing a second pair that you can actually walk in.
Boots, sneakers or something with a decent sole are perfect for getting around the mountain. You can always swap into your beautiful shoes once we’re where we need to be.
-
Layers are your friend.
Thermals underneath your dress or suit, warm socks, boots for travelling and a beautiful coat or fur can make a huge difference.
You might feel brave standing on a snowy mountain in wedding clothes, but trust us, it is worth it.
And a sneaky whisky never hurt anyone either.
For more details on what to wear for a Queenstown Elopement for every season, visit our blog.

Yes we have the amazing team at Wedding Prep Studio that can take care of your garment steaming, they even pick up and drop off to make the process seamless.
-
You can have a look over our recommendations for spray tans, nails, hair cuts
Wet weather & backup plans
-
We have a Plan B. And usually a Plan C.
Queenstown weather can change quickly, particularly in the mountains, so we keep a close eye on the forecast leading up to your elopement.
If you’re happy to embrace a little weather, we have beautiful umbrellas and some incredible ground locations that still look amazing in moody conditions.
If the weather is truly terrible, we can look at alternative locations, indoor options or, where possible, moving things around.
Read more info on wet weather back up plans here.
-
Safety always comes first, so the final decision on whether we can fly sits with the helicopter company.
If flying isn’t possible, we’ll talk you through the options.
Depending on your itinerary, the weather and availability, that might mean waiting for a weather window, switching to one of our beautiful ground locations or looking at another day.
This is exactly why we recommend staying in Queenstown for a couple of days after your planned elopement date.
-
Queenstown forecasts love to change their minds, so we don’t make weather calls too early.
We’ll keep an eye on things in the lead-up and communicate with you if we think the weather could affect your plans.
Sometimes a forecast that looks terrible three days out turns into an absolute stunner.
Trust us to keep watching it. You enjoy Queenstown.
-
Not necessarily.
We have a selection of wet weather and alternative options available depending on your package, guest numbers and what Mother Nature is doing.
If having an indoor backup locked in from the beginning would make you feel more relaxed, talk to us and we can discuss the options.

PHOTOGRAPHY
-
We work with Carla Mitchell Photography exclusively who is a key part of our amazing team, she knows our locations and exactly how the day flows, Carla also has a couple of hand picked associate shooters who may be with you on the day (Carla still does all editing)
Your photographer will be confirmed as part of the planning process, and you can relax knowing you’re in very good hands.here
-
Definitely not. In fact, we’d rather you didn’t.
Our photographers will guide you when you need it, but the aim is for your photos to actually feel like you.
Walk, laugh, cuddle, drink champagne, soak it all in. No modelling experience required around here.
-
Absolutely. If there’s a particular photography style, location or kind of shot you love, you can add this on “The Finer Details” form, you are also able to have a chat with carla prior to your date if you would like to
We won’t recreate a Pinterest board shot-for-shot, but it’s really helpful for understanding what you’re drawn to, make sure these are realistic to what you are looking to book and Queenstown based
-
Your photographer will provide you with a sneak peak (up to 20 images) 2 business days after your elopement date, your final edited gallery can take up to 12 weeks.
VIDEOGRAPHY
-
We think so.
Photos capture incredible moments, but video lets you hear the vows, the laughs, the wind on the mountain and all those little moments you probably didn’t even realise were happening.
It’s especially lovely if family and friends aren’t there with you. You’ll have something you can take home and share with everyone who missed the day.
-
Yes you can absolutely add content to your elopement package, this is a nice way to capture some raw footage of the day, if you are wanting to post to social media.
-
Not at all.
Our team works together all the time and knows how to give each other space. You won’t have a production crew following you around the mountain.
We keep things relaxed, natural and very much focused on the two of you.
FLOWERS
-
Of course. Once your wedding is locked in we gather all the info we need along the way, you’ll be able to add your inspiration images to “ The Final Details” form, so we can get a feel for what you love.
Our florist will then create something beautiful that suits your style, the season and what is looking amazing locally.
-
You’re welcome to tell us what you love (and what you definitely don’t), but we recommend being a little flexible when it comes to exact flower varieties.
Seasonal availability can change, so our florist will use your inspiration, colours and overall vibe to create something that feels like you.
-
Absolutely. Your groom buttonhole is included in your package, and we can organise additional bouquets or something a little extra, let us know and we can organise it for you.
HAIR & MAKEUP
-
Absolutely. Save a few inspiration images of looks you love and have them ready to show your stylist on the day. We work with incredibly talented local artists who know what works for Queenstown conditions (hello wind, mountains and the occasional four seasons in one day), so bring your ideas and then trust them to work their magic.
-
You definitely can, but for most of our couples travelling to Queenstown, it isn’t necessary. Inspiration photos and a good chat with your stylist on the day are generally all they need.
If you would feel more comfortable having a trial, just let us know and we can book it in for you.
-
As a general rule, clean, dry hair from the night before works well, but we’ll make sure you have all the prep info you need.
-
We allow two hours for bridal hair & makeup, your stylist will arrive a little bit before to get all set up. For guest hair & makeup we allow 1.5 hours.
HELICOPTER ELOPEMENTS
-
This depends on the helicopter, location and total passenger weights.
If you’re planning on bringing guests, let us know when you enquire so we can work out the best option for your group. We have options of heli that fit 6 passengers and 9 passengers, we will put your package together the best way possible.
-
That depends on your package, the weather and flying conditions on the day.
Queenstown has some truly insane alpine locations, and the helicopter team will work with us to choose the best and safest option for the conditions.
Sometimes the mountain chooses for us, and honestly, those days can end up being the best ones.
-
You’re welcome to tell us what kind of scenery you love and pop your desired location in the booking form, but exact landing locations can never be guaranteed.
Weather, wind, snow and aviation conditions all come into play. Your pilot has the final say on where it is safe to land.
Wherever we end up, we promise the view won’t exactly be terrible.
Getting legally married in New Zealand
-
Yes! You don’t need to be a New Zealand citizen or resident to get married here.
Your New Zealand marriage is legally recognised, although depending on your home country there may be additional paperwork required once you return home.
We recommend checking the requirements for your country before travelling.
-
Yes.
You’ll need to apply for your marriage licence before the wedding, but don’t worry, we’ll tell you what needs to happen and when.
-
Yes, you need two witnesses for a legal New Zealand marriage.
If it’s just the two of you coming to Queenstown, no problem. Members of our QTE crew can step in as your witnesses.
-
Yes, provided they understand what they are witnessing and are able to sign the paperwork.
If you’re unsure, just ask us and we can check with your celebrant.
-
We’ll make sure you know exactly what is required before you arrive.
Our celebrant will also be in touch ahead of your elopement, so there won’t be any surprise paperwork while you’re standing on top of a mountain.
